The antenna uses 2.4ghz frequency, which is what wireless uses. Will this device use your wireless router as some sort of power boost? I didn’t think radio traveled very well over 2.4.

XBee modules come in two versions:
Short range, which uses 2.4 GHz. They typically have an outdoor range of 3.2km to 1.2km or several hundred meters indoors.
And Long range, which uses 868 MHz. Some modules have a reported maximum range of 64 kilometers at 1 Watt output power, although of course you should probably expect a range less than that in practice.
